Dizziness in Older Adults
and Chiropractic Care

A Recent randomized clinical trial has certified that chiropractic spinal adjustments may have significant positive results with dizziness in older adults. This has far reaching implications in the lives of so many.Dizziness

Dizziness is a very common problem in older adults.  According to Maarsingh , Dros, Schellevis, van Weert, Bindels, and van der Horst in BMC Family Practice (2010), family medical practitioners reported an 8.3% one-year prevalence of dizziness reported by patients over the age of 65, with woman more often affected.  Authorities feel the incidence is probably higher as not all seniors report these symptoms to their doctor.  Depending on the severity of symptoms, dizziness can limit physical and social activities.  Often seniors are concerned about falling which could lead to injuries.  I have noticed that those affected often shorten their gait (stride) creating increased leg and spinal stiffness over time.

Hawk and Cambron studied the effect of chiropractic care on dizziness in 2009.  They enrolled 16 seniors 65 and older who received 16 chirpractic adjustments during an 8 week period.  Of the patients with significant dizziness at baseline, half had scores of 0 (no dizziness) at visit 16. Patients with dizziness tended to have greater chronic pain and showed greater reductions in that pain than nondizzy patients.  The authors reported that this was an initial pilot study and urged further research.

I have noticed a similar patern in my practice over the years amoung seniors with dizziness.  Some get remarkable benefits while others don't notice a significant difference.  The majority of seniors with dizziness also had marked neck stiffness with decreased range of motion in their cervical spine (neck).  In most cases the chiropractic adjustments (manipulations) decreased spinal stiffness, increased range of motion and reduced pain.

I have also noticed that those seniors who perform my "Core Exercise" routine regularly have better resuts.  Click here to view these exercises and print out a copy so that you can try them at home.

Eat right, exercise, supplement wisely and maintain a positive mental attitude.  That's how we'll grow old gracefully, together.
